Build on the Rock
I often obtain inspiration while walking along the shore of Loch Etive, in Argyll, (Scotland) with the dog, seeing the beauty of God's creation all around me.. and I get some exercise as a bonus!
On one occasion I came upon a section of very pebbly beach under the sheltering branches of a huge tree. As I came closer , I saw a great mound of sand in the middle of the pebbles. On closer inspection I saw a rabbit burrow, obviously excavated with precision and great strength. A rabbit with a vision! Inwardly thinking what an achievement, preparing warm, cosy and safe surroundings for itself and its offspring. But just as I was about to continue on my walk, I looked further up the shore, beyond the burrow, and to my horror saw a line of seaweed which demarcated the high spring tide line. The burrow would be flooded when the tide turned and all that industrious work destroyed along with any occupant of the burrow. I actually felt sorry for the rabbit although I could see them far enough in the garden! The parable of the man building his house on the sand came to mind. Building on a rock takes time compared to sand, but only one building survives the storms, the other destroyed when the tides come in. And so with life. What foundations are we building on? Are we satisfied with the quick fix which doesn't last? Psalm 62 says ' My soul finds rest in God, my salvation comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and salvation. He is my fortress. I shall never be shaken' I asked myself how much time and effort have I wasted doing things MY way before asking my Heavenly Father who knows all and sees all what HIS plans are? I want to build my life on firm foundations. I don't have time or energy to waste for my efforts to be destroyed. How about you, dear reader? |
