A Bruised Reed
A bruised reed He will not break, and a smouldering wick He will not quench, till He brings justice and a just cause to victory. (Matthew 12:20)
I have a small area of garden behind my shed in which I grew potatoes. Every year, I added more compost until it was well over a foot deep. One year I stopped planting potatoes and used the ground as a 'hospital bed' for sick and dying plants and shrubs which I wanted to keep. I carefully transplanted them to the sheltered area where they were looked after, fed and watered until they returned to their full healthy blooms. It was a great success as over 90% of the transplants survived and flourished and could then be returned to 'active service' in other parts of the garden. In society, there are many individuals who feel worthless, on their last legs, no hope whatsoever. They don't know which direction to turn or how to get the help they need. Many feel they have failed. Even for the Christian, rebelling against God, the Bible calls it sinning, may bring about a sense of desperation that they have blown it. However, there is good news. The verse from Matthew says that He, Jesus, will not break a bruised reed. He can see the potential in us. He knows the heart and He is ready to forgive, to transplant us into an environment where His Spirit nurtures and nourishes. We can also play our part by coming alongside those who may not be as fortunate as ourselves. Hope Kitchen is one example of caring and compassion in the locality. That is why it is renamed-New Hope. And everything is done in His name. See if we can show compassion to someone less fortunate than us this week and tell them the Good News of the forgiving Christ. |
